The COVID-19 lockdown has made all of us stay indoors—invariably, we have and are still spending a lot of time observing our surroundings and sometimes, even improving them. Now that we have spent more than three months within the confines of our own home, we have likely pondered its pandemic-specific efficiencies (and inefficiencies). As the deadly virus continues to incite unprecedented global changes, it’s becoming more difficult with every passing day to predict the extent to which it will reshape society. But on a more micro level, our homes—the place we have been closely observing these past few months—are poised for plenty of structural changes (or not).
The Bedroom Is Now Our Make-Shift Office
Gone are the days, when we used to sit on that comfortable office chair, sip the delicious morning coffee to start our days. With the global pandemic and nationwide lockdown imposed, majority offices are continuing their operations by working from home. With the study room being hijacked by parents and siblings, we have been left with no other option but to make our bedrooms our new office. But this situation has not decreased our morale and with intense zeal and enthusiasm, we have remodeled our bedroom to give it the look and feel of an office.
The Dining Room Is The Restaurant Now
With restaurants remaining closed for dine-in purposes for almost three months, we have been left with no other option but to improvise our dining room and make it look like a restaurant. With some decorations, rearrangement and reshuffling here and there, our dining spaces have made us feel the closest to being in a restaurant. This restaurant was a self-service one with no fancy cuisine, but it sure witnessed a lot of giggle, love and warmth. This lockdown has brought a lot of families together and dining time has been the best out of the lot.
The Balcony Has Become The Cafe
Oh how we miss the cool breeze caressing our face, the open sky to sit under and the smell of hot chocolate coming closer! Hold on to that thought as now, even if you can’t visit a cafe, you surely can bring a cafe home. Go to your balcony, shift a table, bring two chairs, arrange for some fairy lights, put on some light music and call your partner on a video call. Voila! Your cafe is ready. Whenever you feel down, just make these quick preparations and no one can stop you from having a nice date at your favourite cafe cum home.
The Design & Structural Changes That COVID-19 May Induce
More Multifunctional Areas
During this lockdown period, many families have been cramped up together, making their living situations get pretty uncomfortable. In small homes with numerous walls and tiny spaces, a close-packed space becomes even more compact. As a result of which, homeowners now should look towards a shift in open-plan homes so that all the common areas of the house are accumulated within a single space. The open plan lets you have a flexible furniture layout, therefore making room for multiple functions. An exercise space and a home office are some must-haves in this new structural scenario.
A Well-designed Outdoor Space
Lucky are those who have the luxury of a garden or a terrace and balcony. They should make the most of those places. Most professionals will now continue working from home more than ever and will need areas in the house that can make them feel rejuvenated and relaxed from the increased office pressure. These open spaces can be multifunctional and create a good indoor-outdoor connect. A garden or a balcony also helps create better ventilation in the home, thereby keeping the occupants mentally and physically healthy.
Finally, A Relaxing Ambience
As people across the globe have spent a lot of time indoors, they have realized how necessary it is to make comfort a priority when building home. A relaxing ambiance can be achieved with soft-toned walls, good illumination, ventilation, the use of natural building materials and lots of greenery around.
